Lost Episode 4.07 "Ji Yeon" - Screencap Recap

OK, so once again I have to say I was a bit disappointed with this episode.  One reason for this was because this was the episode Darlton wanted to go to the hiatus with (before ABC demanded to air 4.08 as well prior to the break), giving the impression that there would be either a great reveal or a great cliffhanger ending (hype is hard to live up to unfortunately).  Another reason was that despite a couple of scenes (the revealing discussion in Captain Gault's "office" and the Jin reveal), the rest of the episode seemed a bit boring.  Don't get me wrong, there are no bad episodes of Lost.  This was still a good episode, it just didn't blow me away like I was hoping.  I will say that the ending was pretty good and I also liked the new storytelling device in the form of combined flashbacks and flash forwards.  This combination didn't become obvious until the end of the episode by design, and was used as another means of misdirection by the producers.  All in all, I'm not usually a huge fan of Sun and Jin episodes as I don't enjoy their characters nearly as much as some of the others, and this episode was no exception.

Before we begin the recap, let us know what you think happened to Jin in our poll:

Also, who should win this week's Get Lost COW (Clip Of the Week)?

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Current Time>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The episode begins with Keamy warning Frank not to be late.  Frank takes a brown paper bag and goes to see Regina, who is reading a book upside down and appears somewhat out of it.  Frank goes in to speak with Sayid and Desmond.  He tells them that the freighties on the island must have a broken satellite phone because they can't be reached.  He pulls lima beans out of the bag and explains that there was a problem in the kitchen.

Jin and Sun discuss baby names.  Jin thinks it's a girl and suggests Ji Yeon.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Flash Forward>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Sun is pregnant and encounters a great deal of pain.  She seeks medical attention (check out our Easter Eggs post to see what's on TV in Sun's room).
Photobucket

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Flashback>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Jin frantically races to find a stuffed Panda in a toy store.
Photobucket

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Current Time>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Kate, Jin, and Sun are skeptical of Daniel and Charlotte being there to rescue them.
Photobucket

Someone slides Sayid and Desmond a note with a conspicuous message.
Photobucket

Sun introduces herself to Daniel and presses him for answers regarding his group's intentions of rescuing the losties.  Daniel cops out and says it's not his call.
Photobucket

Jack checks in on Sun, who says she feels fine.

Juliet catches Sun trifling through her things.  Sun is looking for more prenatal vitamins.  Juliet quickly performs basic arithmetic in her head and resolves that Sun should have vitamins for 20 days.  Juliet then logically concludes that Sun is planning a trip, which she is (to Locke's camp) because she doesn't trust the freighties and apparently doesn't believe in Juliet enough to heed her warnings.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Flash Forward>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Sun is wheeled into a hospital and is immediately recognized as one of the Oceanic 6 (5 down for sure, 1 to go...).
Photobucket

Sun is in pain and her baby is in distress, so says a stand in doctor (her normal doctor is at a conference, conveniently leaving the fill in, who knows nothing about Sun's marital status).

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Flashback>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Jin is still scrambling to get to the hospital with his gift.  His phone gets destroyed, his cab gets stolen (along with Panda #1), and he has to buy Panda #2.  Similar to Jack's phone in 3.22 "Through the Looking Glass", Jin's phone is a hint as to the timing of the flash.  His phone appears to be a bit old school.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Current Time>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

In a last ditch effort to keep Sun from bailing for Locke's camp, Juliet reveals Sun's affair to Jin, who promptly turns around and heads back to the beach.

Bernard goes fishing with Jin and talks about Karma, intimating that good things happen to good people.  Jin catches a fish.
Photobucket

Regina, shackled with chains, is apparently no Houdini.  She leaps off the freighter in an apparent suicide.  Had she gone mad?  Was the upside down book an indication?
Photobucket

Regina's actions prompt our first glimpse of Captain Gault.
Photobucket

Captain Gault brings Sayid and Desmond into his chambers, where a fruitful discussion ensues.  We find that Gault openly admits that Chuck Widmore is in charge of the freighter.  He also reveals that the Oceanic 815 crash was a setup that required an enormous amount of resources.
Photobucket

Juliet talks to Sun and convinces her not to leave for Locke's camp.
Photobucket

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Flash Forward>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Sun, while yelling for Jin (although he's not there), delivers a healthy baby girl named Ji Yeon.
Photobucket

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Current Time>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Dr. Ray takes Sayid and Desmond to their new room, only to find leftover blood and brain residue showering the wall.
Photobucket

Dr. Ray calls on Kevin to clean it up.  We then find that Kevin is actually...Michael!  Michael introduces himself as Kevin Johnson.  Sayid and Desmond allow Michael's true identity to remain concealed for the time being.  Where's Walt?

Sun and Jin share a nice conversation where Jin explains to Sun that he recognizes the man he once was, and for that reason, he forgives Sun. To me, this could complete the story arc of Jin's redemption. We have been told over and over by Darlton that ultimately Lost is a story of redemption for the each of the Losties.Photobucket

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Flashback>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Jin finally makes it to the hospital.  We are let in on the surprise that Jin's saga is actually a flashback.  Jin is doing Mr. Paik's bidding by sucking up to a Chinese ambassador whose daughter has just given birth.
Photobucket

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Flash Forward>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Sun takes her wedding ring out of a hospital bag and is primping for company.  It's Hurley!  He's happy no one else is coming.  Is he just being nice to Sun by making it appear that he wants the baby all to himself or is there an incident that we're yet to find out about that makes things incredibly uncomfortable for the Oceanic 6 to be around each other?
Photobucket

They go to see Jin...who's dead?!?  We see on his tombstone that he apparently died on the date of the Oceanic 815 crash, so is he really dead or is he back on the island?  It would seem he's dead based on Sun's demeanor at his grave, although she talks about missing him, which leaves the door open.  To some extent, there is a cover up in place.  Obviously, Jin didn't die during the crash, so if nothing else, the Oceanic 6 have agreed to keep quiet about what happened to Jin.  I can't wait to see what really happened...

Can I take issue with your commentary on the conversation in the Captain's quarters? When the captain references "resources", I thought he was talking about the resources Widmore spent to acquire the black box from the fake 815, not the resources required to stage such an event. I've watched it twice, and I'm still coming up with that.

      I believe this is a joint tombstone (Jin's and Sun's) and March 20, 1980 is Sun's birthday.

jin is neither dead nor back on the island. i believe he has time shifted and is stuck at an earlier date than sun. this would still proclude a cover-up

For the trifle that it's worth, trifling means something of little value or importance, I think the word you were thinking of is rifling.
