Lost Episode 4.05 - The Constant Screencap Recap
Welcome to another edition of the Get Lost Screencap Recap. This week we recap episode 4.05 - The Constant. I have a feeling that this episode will get mixed reactions, much like Flashes Before Your Eyes did last year. My take...I loved it. Although we didn't even get to see a majority of the cast, it was worth it because we got to focus on Desmond, Get Lost's favorite character. I was glued to my seat the entire episode, with my head reeling trying to digest all of the time travel info we received. And the final scenes with Penny were about as good as it gets. I usually don't point out the music in episodes, but several times in this episode I found myself thinking how perfectly it fit the mood of the scene. Kudos to Michael Giacchino and crew. Check out our initial reactions and easter egg stuff right here.
And while your here, be sure to also check out our preview of Episode 4.06.
Vote for the Get Lost COW (Clip of the Week) below. We had trouble coming up with nominees this week, so put your ideas in the comments section and maybe we'll add them to the poll. We've updated the post with the audio clips. And the nominees are...
Nominee #1: Juliet: "maybe if you talk really slow..."
Nominee #2: Penny & Desmond: Reunited and it feels so good (extended version with music while the phone rings)
Nominee #2: Penny & Desmond: Reunited and it feels so good (short version--begins as Penny picks up the phone)
Nominee #3: Desmond: "You are not gonna stick me with that, brother..."
Here we go...
We open on Desmond in the helicopter, once again staring at his picture of Penny.
Sayid asks Lapidus about the crude map he is using...turns out it is a "cheat sheet" that Faraday drew for him.
Sayid seems quite concerned that Lapidus is heading straight into a thunderhead.
Lapidus is supposed to stay on a bearing of 305, but it appears he veers off course a bit here. Could it be just enough to send Desmond into a downward spiral of time traveling flashes?
The chopper starts shaking, Des grabs his seat and...
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Flashback to 1996 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Des is rudely awakened by his drill sergeant. It takes him too sodding long to get to his mark.
Desmond's sluggish attempt at rousting from bed earns everyone some exercise time in the yard.
And then mid-crunch...
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Back to helicopter >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Des freaks out. He doesn't know who Sayid is. Oh no.
Cut to island. Charlotte's not making any friends with her standoffish remarks.
Is it just me, or did Juliet look hotter than usual this episode? Nice.
Danield explains that the Losties perception of how long the hepicopter has been gone isn't exactly how long it's been gone. As long as Frank follows the bearing, all should be fine.
Cut to helicopter. Franks lands the helicopter on the freighter (named the Kahana).
We meet some new freighties. They are d-bags.

Desmond explains that he is "not supposed to be here!"
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Flashback to 1996 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Des explains to his brutha, Billy, about his dream trip to a boat...and Penny was there in a photo. Sodding brilliant.
After this ass knocks Desmond's change to the ground, Des bends over to pick it up and...
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Back to freighter >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
...Keamie and Omar escort Desmond to sickbay. They explain that they last ported in Fiji.
They lock him in sickbay with a new friend...who apparently shares the same affliction!
Sayid trades Frank his gun for the "satellite" phone. Frank explains that the phones can only call each other.
Sayid calls Jack, who promptly puts him on speaker. Sayid explains that Desmond has gone nuts. Daniel questions whether Des has been exposed to radiation or electromagnetism.
Back in sickbay, Doc Ray comes in and gives Desmond's new friend a shot. He then begins to check out Desmond when...
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Flashback to 1996 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
...Desmond picks up his change and calls Penny. She sounds none to pleased to hear from old Des. He requests to see her and gets abrublty shot down. Penny tells Des not to go to the flat because she has moved, but she doesn't say where...
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Back to freighter >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Frank walks in with the sat phone. Faraday wants to talk to Des. He asks Des what year he thinks it is. Well 1996, of course! Faraday then tells Des that he needs to go to Queens College to find pseudo-mullet-sporting past-Faraday back in 1996 and tell him to set the device to 2.342 with an oscillation of 11 Hz. And if that doesn't work, mention Eloise.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Flashback to 1996 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Des promptly gets to Queens College to meet past-Faraday. After some convincing, past-Faraday takes Des to his lab.
He then adjusts his time machine with the settings that Des gives him. Then poor Eloise gets zapped, and magically runs through the bloody maze. Dan explains that only her consciousness traveled through time.
(note...we posted a ton of pictures of this scene over at DarkUFO)
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Back to freighter >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Keamie grabs the phone from Des. Sayid wants to speak with captain.
Keamie then locks them up again in sickbay. We find out that the creep is George Minkowski. He says that Penny Widmore had been trying to call the boat, but they were forbidden from answering her calls.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Flashback to 1996 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Des was out for 75 minutes. Eloise is now dead.
We don't find out whether or not Daniel taught Eloise how to navigate the maze before she died. She died because she had no anchor, no constant. To stop the flashing back and forth through time he needs to find a constant...something that exists now and then.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Back to freighter >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Des tells Sayid that he needs to call Penny. George explains that someone sabotaged all the comms equipment two days ago. They free George, and find that someone unlocked the door. Ben's mole? Frank? Who knows.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Flashback to 1996 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Des heads to an auction to find Charles Widmore. Chuck is buying a diary from the Black Rock's first mate (which happens to be lot 2342...same as Faradays time machine numbers). Chuck agrees to give Des Penny's address (surprisingly, without putting up any fight).
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Back to freighter >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Des, George, and Sayid make there way to the comms room. Once again, Sayid to the rescue. He begins fixing a phone that was sitting around.
It's 2004.
George bites the dust. Des awaits the same fate unless he can come up with Penny's number.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Flashback to 1996 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Des goes to Penny's new flat. He manages to get her new phone number: 7946-0893. He promises not to call for 8 years...December 24, 2004.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Back to freighter >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Des makes the call. Go watch this scene. Words won't do it justice.

Cut to island. Daniel finds a message to himself in his journal.
Cut to LOST.
So my question is, will Desmond now not remember anyone? It will be interesting to see him re-meet all of the Losties again.

I thought that post-Penny-call Desmond was clearly was back to his old self, as he referred to the Island, which he wouldn't have remembered otherwise.

This episode is set in 1996 with flash forwards to 2004. Not the other way around I think.
Des is all better now. The constant righted him in the time stream *or at least that's how it appeared to me*
The new message in Faraday's book also proves that you can change 'things' about the future even though we've been told several times on lost that you can't.
Interesting stuff.

I'm pretty sure Desmond remembers everything about the island now that he found his constant. That's why he called Sayid by his name after talking with Penny.

In Daniels book on one of the pages is a diagram with 8 circles all connected to each other with lines. 4 of the lines have labels: Space Time, Real Time, Imaginary Space, Imaginary Time. Some of the circles have labels: Event A, Event B, Event C.

I agree that Desmond's memory was restored and he was once again rooted in 2004 after he estabished contact with his constant. He refers to the island, calls Sayid by name and regains his usual demeanor.

JohnnyZito, It's not really set in 1996 or 2004... Desmond is slipping back and forth between the two, and he does not know which year it really is, and neither do we. When he gets "fixed" at the end, it's 2004, and it started in 2004...
Also, how do we know the note Daniel wrote to himself is new? Maybe HE too has the time-slipping disease (the guy on the boat said something like "fix him? Daniel can't even help himself") and that's why he was so agreeable to let Desmond off the island, so he could use Dez for his constant. (obviously he would have known they had been exposed to electromagnetism, that's how they found the boat, no?)

Maybe you CAN change the future. Desmond made a comment that future-Daniel would have remembered the meeting, so you can't change the future, and past-Daniel agreed, but how would either of them know, really?

Why is the calendar on the freighter marked with yellow Xs on the dates October 20th - 23rd, 2004?
