Lost Episode 4.05 - The Constant - Initial Reactions & Easter Eggs
Wow! Awesome episode. We take a break from New Othertown to focus almost solely on Desmond. I loved this episode and wanted to throw out some initial observations. The last couple scenes with Desmond and Penny were perfectly done...some of the best Lost yet. The Desmond/Penny love story is one of my favorite storylines on the show, and in my opinion, far more engaging than the Jater/Skater love triangle.
-Find 815 fans should have recognized the name of the auction house selling the first mate's diary. The name, "Southfields," was also one of the clues in the ARG.
-The lot # for the diary was 2342, the same numbers that Faraday had Desmond tell his past self for his "time machine."
-We have a new Hanso, I think the name was Tovard?
-We here another Charles Dickens reference...whatever item was up for bid after the diary (I think a chess set?) was in the possession of Dickens when he died.
-Penny's address was 423 (the numbers...4, 23)
-In the scene when Faraday hands the term paper to the student, there is a sign on the door that says "Department of Physics, Clarendon...(bunch of numbers)" There apparently is a Clarendon Laboratory at Oxford University (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarendon_Laboratory) that is part of the physics dept.
-I'm convinced there's an anagram in either Cheyne Walk or Tovard Hanso. Haven't found anything though.
-Who opened the sickbay door for Des, Sayid, and George? Could it be Ben's mole?
-It appears that Ms. Hawking and Brother Campbell have also been to Queens College. (Thanks to B-ildo for pointing that out)
What else did people notice?

I have always wondered about that picture of the monk the the lady from the jewelry store where Desmond got pennys ring, and his flash back.
Does anyone have any theories?

where is that picture shown on the show? I don't recall ever seeing it.

I just noticed the dog in the picture looks like the dog from the picture in Jacobs cabin!

it's the same dog, belongs to Jack Bender, has been in other scenes before

Cheyne Walk is a famous area in London--lots of famous people have lived there. Can't find anyone who relates to the show in any way though.
I've been looking at the screencaps from the auction scene, trying to see if there are any familiar people in the audience. Anyone see something I'm not?

Cheyne Walk was also a Find815 clue(word).

I thought it was Tovard as well

Cheyne Walk = Leaky Wench

I think her name is Lulu, she was seen playing with Charlie in the extra stuff on S3 DVDs.

In the flashback when Daniel Faraday finds out about 815, he is crying. Could it be because he is remembering 1996? And Desmond somehow told him "Back to the future" style that in several years he would meet up with him. You see at the end Daniel had wrote to use Desmond as his constant but when was that written then or now?? This scene definitely reminded me of Back to the Future when Marty has to go find the Doc and convince him ala flux capacitator to help him get back to the future. Anybody else agree??

is Brother Campbell also Desmonds commander? kinda look similar- but dont have a good photo of Bro Campbell to compare it to.

does anyone know if charlie remembers des talking to him in Flashes Before Your Eyes? Des asks Faraday if he remembers him going to talk to him at Oxford, but Faraday forgets because of memory problems, exposure to radiation, whatever the reason. If Des truly did time jump in Flashes, then Charlie should hypothetically remember, right?

I don't think we got a definitive answer on that. It was never brought up that Charlie did remember it, so I am assuming he did not.

Did anyone notice when Desmond was walking towards the phonebooth during basic trianing (in the rain) and a man ran into him, made him drop coins, then glared at him...I thought the man looked a lot like good 'ol Ethan...anyone else catch that? It may not have been, just thought it looked just like him...
Reply to this
it wasnt Ethan, there are good closeups of him-completely different nose and accent (and Ethan has been shown in flashbacks as an American recruiter for Mittlelos (sp?)research company
Reply to this
Dunno if it's been mentioned before, but reading this, I just realized that Mittelos is an anagram for "lost time".
(Coming into lost analysis late, so forgive repetition.)

I was pretty sure the name i heard was Torvald, as that is a normal scandinavian name unlike Torvad (which isnt a name). And Hanso was danish wasnt he?
Reply to this
If his name were Tobard Hansel, that makes out 'the boar's land'. Is Hanso yer man from Dharma?

Cheyne Walk is a very famous street in London - very exclusive and very very expensive. I think it was chosen to show that Penny had reverted to her expensive lifestyle (in flashes before your eyes she indicates that she gave up her posh flat to live with Desmond).

Just curious if anyone else is looking at all the number references this much - during the auction one of the paddle numbers was 755 - 7+5+5=17, 1+7=8 which is one of our numbers

It was Torvald, not Tovard.
I am surprised that nobody has said that Faraday must have time traveled... If he wrote himself a note saying if anything goes wrong, Desmond is his constant... he was experimenting himself?? also if the constant has to be something you are close to and care a lot about, i wonder if there is going to be more backstory with them.

I have a lot of doubt as to how good of a job SAS does at pushing analysis into the database instead of pulling all the data out to run the analysis on the SAS server itself.
